1.03 DEFINITIONS

  1. Bullet-Resistant Glass: A multiple lamination of glass or glass and plastic that is designed to resist penetration from medium-to-super-power small arms and high-power rifles and to minimize spalling.
  2. Forced Entry Glass: A multiple lamination of glass or glass and plastic that is designed to resist penetration from physical attack.

1.04 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

  1. Design Requirements
    1. Provide glazing systems capable of withstanding normal thermal movements, wind-loads and impact loads, without failure, including loss due to defective manufacture, fabrication and installation; deterioration of glazing materials; and other defects in construction.
    2. Provide glass products in the thicknesses and strengths (annealed or heat-treated) required to meet or exceed the following criteria based on project loads and in-service conditions per ASTM E1300.
      1. Minimum thickness of annealed or heat-treated glass products is selected, so the worst-case probability of failure does not exceed the following:
        1. 8 breaks per 1000 for glass installed vertically or not over 15 degrees from the vertical plane and under wind action.
        2. 1 break per 1000 for glass installed 15 degrees or more from the vertical plane and under action of wind and/or snow.

1.05 SUBMITTALS

  1. Submit either 6-inch (152mm) or 12-inch (305mm) square samples of each type of glass indicated (except clear monolithic glass products), and either 6-inch (152mm) or 12-inch (305mm) long samples of each color required (except black) for each type of sealant or gasket exposed to view.
  2. Submit manufacturer's product data for each security glazing type, including type of materials, thickness, method of test, test performance report and glazing and cleaning instructions.
  3. Glazing contractor shall obtain compatibility and adhesion test reports from sealant manufacturer, indicating that glazing materials were tested for compatibility and adhesion with glazing sealant, as well as other glazing materials including insulating units.
  4. Glazing Contractor shall provide test reports showing that the glass meets the requirements of any security test reports specified on drawings.

1.06 QUALITY ASSURANCE

  1. Manufacturers Qualifications: Firm experienced in manufacturing security glass, types as specified, with a minimum documented 5 years of successful in-service performance.
  2. Installers Qualification: Engage a firm experienced in installing security glass, types as specified, with a minimum documented 5 years of successful in-service performance.
  3. Testing Agencies: Subject to compliance with requirements, acceptable testing agencies are:
    1. HP White Laboratories, Inc.
    2. Warnock-Hersey International
    3. Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc.
    4. Underwriters Laboratories, Inc
  4. Comply with published recommendations of glass product manufacturers and organizations below, except where more stringent requirements are indicated. Refer to these publications for glazing terms not otherwise defined in this section or referenced standards.

  5. Single-source fabrication responsibility: All fabricated glass shall be processed and supplied by a single fabricator.

1.07 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

  1. Comply with manufacturer's instruction for receiving, handling, storing and protecting glass & glazing materials.
  2. Delivery: Deliver materials in manufacturer's original, unopened, undamaged containers with identification labels intact.
  3. Storage and Protection: Store materials protected from exposure to harmful environmental conditions and at temperature and humidity conditions recommended by the manufacturer.
  4. Exercise exceptional care to prevent edge damage to glass and damage/deterioration to coating on glass.

1.08 PROJECT / SITE CONDITIONS

  1. Environmental Requirements: Installation of glass products at ambient air temperature below 40 degrees F (4.4 degrees C) is prohibited.
  2. Field Measurements: When construction schedule permits, verify field measurements with drawing dimensions prior to fabrication of glass products.

1.09 WARRANTY

  1. Provide written 5-year warranty from date of manufacture for laminated security glass. Warranty covers deterioration due to normal conditions of use and not to handling installing, protecting and maintaining practices contrary to glass manufacturer's published instructions.

  2. Laminated Assemblies: Laminated security glass assemblies are to be bonded with polyvinyl and/or aliphatic polyurethane interlayer, as required, and fabricated in an autoclave using heat, plus pressure producing products free of foreign substances and air pockets.

Architects note: These products provided minimal attack resistance and should be used cautiously. Select all products that apply. Delete all products not used.
Type SG-1 - Laminated Glass, Clear: Consisting of 3 plies of 3mm heat strengthened glass bonded together with 2 plies of .090 polyvinyl butyral. Overall nominal thickness shall be 1/2". Product shall comply with:

Architects note: These products are intended for use in an area where forced entry/exit is the primary threat. Although these products do provide some ballistic resistance, they are not designed to resist spalling. Select all products that apply and delete those that don't.

  1. Security Glass Sealed Insulating Glass (IG) Units

Architects note: Any of the security glazing products specified herein can be incorporated into an insulating glass unit, with the exception of the laminated polycarbonates. Security glass products are typically the interior Light of the IGU. However, any product with an exposed polycarbonate must be the interior Light of the IGU. Any bullet resistant product must be the interior Light of the IGU.

      1. Provide hermetically sealed IG units with dehydrated airspace, dual sealed with a primary seal of polyisobutylene (PIB), or thermo plastic spacer (TPS) and a secondary seal of silicone or an organic sealant depending on the application.
      2. US Requirements:
        1. Insulating glass units are certified through the Insulating Glass Certification Council (IGCC) to either ASTM E774, or to ASTM E2190, or both.
        2. Annealed float glass shall comply with ASTM C1036, Type I, Class 1 (clear), Class 2 (tinted), Quality-Q3.
        3. Heat-Strengthened float glass shall comply with ASTM C1048, Type I, Class 1 (clear), Class 2 (tinted), Quality Q3, Kind HS.
        4. Tempered float glass shall comply with ASTM C1048, Type I, Class 1 (clear), Class 2 (tinted), Quality Q3, Kind FT.
        5. Laminated float glass shall comply with ASTM C1172 and with other requirements as specified (UL, NIJ, WMFL, HP White, ASTM F 1233, etc.).
      1. Glass shall be annealed, heat-strengthened or tempered as required by codes, or as required to meet thermal stress and wind loads.
      2. Glass heat-treated by horizontal (roller hearth) process with inherent roller wave distortion parallel to the bottom edge of the glass as installed when specified.
  1. Glazing Products
    1. Select appropriate glazing sealants, tapes, gaskets and other glazing materials of proven compatibility with other materials that they contact. These include, but are not limited to, glass products, insulating glass unit seals and glazing channel substrates under installation and service conditions, as demonstrated by testing and field experience.

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01 EXAMINATION

  1. Site Verification and Conditions
    1. Verify that site conditions are acceptable for installation of the glass.
    2. Verify openings for glazing are correctly sized and within tolerance.
    3. Verify that the minimum required face and edge clearances are being followed.
    4. Do not proceed with glazing until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.02 PREPARATION

  1. Protection
    1. Handle and store product according to manufacturers' recommendations.
  2. Surface Preparation
    1. Clean and prepare glazing channels and other framing members to receive glass.
    2. Remove coatings and other harmful materials that will prevent glass and glazing installation required to comply with performance criteria specified.

3.03 INSTALLATION

  1. Install products using the recommendations of manufacturers of glass, sealants, gaskets and other glazing materials, except where more stringent requirements are indicated, including those in the "GANA Glazing Manual".
  2. Install glass in prepared glazing channels and other framing members.
  3. Install setting blocks in rabbets as recommended by referenced glazing standards in GANA Glazing Manual and IGMA Glazing Guidelines.
  4. Provide bite on glass, minimum edge and face clearances and glazing material tolerances recommended by GANA Glazing Manual.
  5. Provide weep system as recommended by GANA Glazing Manual.
  6. Set glass Lights in each series with uniform pattern, draw, bow and similar characteristics.
  7. Distribute the weight of the glass unit along the edge rather than at the corner.
  8. Comply with manufacturer's and referenced industry recommendations on expansion joints and anchors, accommodating thermal movement, glass openings, use of setting blocks, edge, face and bite clearances, use of glass spacers, edge blocks and installation of weep systems.
  9. Protect glass from edge damage during handling and installation.
  10. Prevent glass from contact with contaminating substances that result from construction operations, such as weld spatter, fireproofing or plaster.

3.04 CLEANING

  1. Clean excess sealant or compound from glass and framing members immediately after application, using solvents or cleaners recommended by manufacturers.
  2. Glass to be cleaned according to:

    2. GANA Glass Information Bulletin GANA TD-02-0402 - Heat-Treated Glass Surfaces Are Different.
  3. Do not use scrapers or other metal tools to clean glass.
